Broadcasting Industry at the heart of a dynamic economy

In 2016, Indonesia’s population is expected to reach 258.6 million and its economy will grow by 6.5%, building
on several years of GDP growth above 5%.
Spanning more than 17,000 islands, the country depends upon continuing investment in its infrastructure, both
to provide essential services and meet the growing expectations of a consumer driven market.
Some key market facts you need to know about this dynamic economy:

  • Tech-savvy Indonesian consumers devote an average of nine hours per day to using multiple devices – via
TV, computer, smartphone and tablet. These multi-screen users register over 23% more media time than
their counterparts in other Asia Pacific countries.
  • The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) of Indonesia has proposed the
adoption of DVB-T2 for free-to-air digital broadcasts. Indonesia is expected to go fully digital by 2018.
  • Television dominates the media landscape in Indonesia with more than 90% of Indonesian household having
    at least one TV set.
  • Besides the publicly owned TVRI, Indonesia has more than 10 private national TV networks and over 100
    local televisions stations.
  • The pay TV environment is hugely competitive. As of December 2014, the government has approved 316 pay
TV operators’ licenses. Some 91 pay TV operators have a permanent pay TV license.
  • Satellite continues to be the dominate pay TV platform, accounting for 89% of total subscribers, followed by
    cable with 8%.
